World Leader in Open Storage Solutions Delivers 30 Percent Better Performance for Oracle Databases

SANTA CLARA, Calif. October 1st, 2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ: JAVA) today announced key technology enhancements and rapid customer adoption rates across its Unified Storage systems portfolio that extend the performance and data protection capabilities of the Sun Storage 7000 family. New software features and up to 30 percent greater controller performance extend the power of the industry's fast-growing Open Storage effort.

In today's complex IT environment, enterprises are forced to store and manage increasing amounts of data within shrinking budgets. The Sun Storage 7000 family was introduced in 2008 to help bring greater performance and decreased complexity in helping business solve this growing challenge. Sun has since shipped over 35 petabytes in its Unified Storage portfolio and has doubled the number of customers quarter-over-quarter across a broad range of industries that include education, financial services, government, healthcare, media and entertainment, manufacturing and others that require faster access to data and easier migration paths.

"Unified Storage has become one of the fastest growing market segments within the open storage industry, as customers love getting performance, simplicity and scalability at a fraction of the cost of traditional storage products," said Graham Lovell, senior director, Open Storage, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Today, Sun raises the bar on the industry with added performance and resiliency to the industry's fastest Unified Storage System. Customers can realize as much as a 30 percent increase in performance and in most cases, faster access to data, simplified data management and easier data migration, even in complex environments."

Sun Adds 30 Percent Performance Boost to Sun Storage 7410

Sun's portfolio enhancements include improved application performance through enhanced iSCSI SAN support and a boost in performance for Oracle databases. In addition, customers can expect higher network performance with up to four times more bandwidth (40Gb/sec) and lower network latency through InfiniBand (IB). The addition of new CPUs delivers 30 percent additional performance up to 24 cores and improved system bandwidth, along with twice the DRAM cache - up to 512GB - the highest in the industry.

Rock-Solid Standards for Data Protection

With the addition Triple-Parity RAID, Sun is the first major storage vendor to offer robust data protection from as many as three drive failures, further reducing the risk of data loss when using larger capacity disk drives with longer rebuild times. Sun also became the first and only major NAS storage vendor to offer Triple Mirroring, which adds additional protection against disk failures and significantly improves backup and disaster recovery scenarios.

Sun also made the Sun Storage 7000 family easier to maintain and deploy, with a new Shadow Data Migration feature that allows customers to easily migrate data from competing legacy NAS devices at no additional cost and iSCSI management and features enhancements that allow for more efficient provisioning of server and storage systems. In addition, storage administrators can now manage their Sun Storage 7000 Systems and Windows storage environment using the Microsoft Management Console, leveraging their existing management experience using this interface.
